TEXT MESSAGE SCAM ALERT
17 OCTOBER 2012
For Public Release
Southwest Regional Police Department has become aware of increased criminal activity using fraudulent text messaging scams.
According to a study by Cloudmark, a company that makes anti-spam software, 70% of spam text messaging is designed to defraud you in some way. By comparison, only 10% of spam emails are sent with criminal intent.
Fraudulent text messages usually involve unsolicited messages from unknown numbers. These messages typically involve advertising “free” gift cards or stating that urgent account problems exist with your bank account. These messages are typically designed to guide you to websites that install malware on your device, stealing your personal information.
Individuals should take the following actions when receiving a fraudulent or spam text message:
Ignore any instructions to reply with “STOP” or “NO” and do not dial back any phone numbers associated with the text message. This is a common practice by scammers to confirm that they have an active contact for future spam.
Forward the text messages to 7726 (SPAM on most keypads). This will alert your wireless carrier to block future texts from those numbers.
Install security upgrades directly from your wireless carrier. Do not install any software from third party companies unless directed to do so by your wireless carrier.
Never store credit card or financial information in emails or notes on your cellphone.
Ask yourself, “Does this seem legitimate?” Understand that banks and other legitimate businesses do not send unsolicited text messages.
